Planes, Trains, and Cruise Ships

Saving Money With Awesome Adventures

When I was living in California, I so wanted to visit my brother in Hawaii.  I didn't want to just visit on Oahu however, I wanted to visit as many of the Hawaiian islands as possible.  Hawaii is not cheap, so I did some research on how to get to all the sights on my list.  Flights between the islands are in the range of $100, not a bad deal for a flight.  Hotels though can be exceedingly expensive.
Enjoying the view at Haleakala National Park.
Norwegian Cruise Line has a cruise which visits many of the islands on a one week itinerary.  However, its one of their most expensive cruises, and we would still have to buy round trip airfare out to the departure port on Oahu.  Frequent cruisers like myself know one way to find a good deal is to look for a repositioning cruise, a cruise which begins in one port and ends in another.  So I looked for and found one leaving the western coast of North America and ending on Oahu after circumnavigating the Hawaiian islands.  This trip required more time than a round trip flight-based trip to Hawaii would have required, but it was worth the extra days we had in Vancouver and Seattle.

Heading out the back of the world famous Pike Place Market in Seattle to the ocean.
Our trip went something like this:
Day 1.  Fly to Seattle and spend a day exploring Pike's Place market
Day 2. Take a train to Vancouver and catch a comedy show
Day 3. Board Rhapsody of Seas in Vancouver
Days 4-8.  Cruise to Hawaii on Rhapsody of the Seas
Days 9-10. Dock in Lahaina, Maui visiting Haleakala National Park, art galleries, and ride a submarine
Day 11.  Dock in Hilo on the Big Island visiting Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and Akaka Falls State Park
Day 12.  Dock in Kona on the Big Island and tour the Kona Brewery
Day 13.  Dock on the island of Kuai to lay in the sun and swim in the ocean
Day 18.  Fly home to California
